I think you should use the number pad as well to control the rest of your 9 unit so its easier to select individual units you want to select.

Hmm I do t remember which game (morrowind?), but they had a system where instead of just having 1-0 as hot keys, you could also use shit+ 1-0 and Ctrl+ 1-0 to use as more hot keys. That might work, right?

Though, because this would be used to select people instead of equipment, it would be pertinent to use alt+ 1-0 as your other hotkeys so that you could still hold shift/ctrl to select multiple people. Either that or we need the ability to assign groups for that purpose.

What about something as simple, as skipping to the next unit with one button (from first to second in order, from second to third, etc.), because we will run out of buttons eventually. Combinations with ctrl and shift should stand for grouping in my opinion, [ctrl + number] to create group, [shift + number] to add selected character to existing group.

Don't forget there is always possibility of pausing a game, so we do not have to panic during some tight events and bash our keyboard furiously just to select one particular member.

I like the previous/next button idea, but I'd also like to see a quick keyboard solution to reach out to each of your dozens of squaddies. How about using the keypad to quickly enter their number? For instance, if you want to reach the eleventh person in your squad, quickly press 1 1 on the keypad. if the squad is limited to 99 members, the second digit press is the cue to go, so you don't even have to press enter. If you want your number one squaddie, press 0 1.
Along side this, I also like the team button idea (ctrl+#).
