Do you remember that scene in Kill Bill, where Bill told The Bride a story (I think it was about his sensei)?
They were sitting by the fire and Bill told a story, occasionally playing dramatic notes with a flute, in a oriental fashion...well that´s the kind of music I´d love to hear in Kenshi, it fits perfectly.
Imagine you are traveling through a determined area, and someone in your squad suddenly starts playing his instrument, and telling a small story related to that zone.
This way we would get moody ambiental music, and lore, in a more entertaining way that most traditional RPGs. Because lets face it, most people dont want to read thousands of books in a pc game, like in oblivion, the witcher, etc...
It would also give us another reason to explore the map, and not just fast travel.
Other great musical score was the one from Van Damme´s "Cyborg" specially the sounds from that windy sound pipe, and Kenshi totally remembers me of that movie
Ambiental music and oral traditions

*Flute sounds all of a sudden. Whole squad staring at the sound source*
- Let me tell you a story of Fog Islands ... *yet more flute sounds* ... once upon a time there was a ma...
- Shut up, Nines! *punch* We're out of food, Paladins're on our tail, we're entering the Fog Men territory, trying to stay low, and you're playin the &%#@ flute, are you sane?!
Sorry, this just has come in mind upon reading your post 8)
Although i'd like to hear such thing when starting a campfire and idling for about a minute

Also another option would be an off voice, but I still root for a random performance by squad members. Obviously it will be done in a secure zone, like a desert with miles of flat landscape. It could also trigger friendly factions reactions: "Out of the fog a bunch of semi-naked young women came up:
- Please stranger, don´t stop playing. Those melodic sounds turns our virginal flesh so excited"
Well they turned out to be not so friendly as they were cannibal amazones, and eat half of the squad after screwing all night long, but you know what I mean

I'd be totally into this sort of thing triggering if and when we set up camp for the night. It would be cool to trigger when the characters are aimless for a certain period of time. Maybe while the camera is centered there so it's not missed, either.

Ok, thas cool too. It would also give us another reason to use more campfires. I´m thinking that hearing a song or tale by the fire could improve certain stats, or help us learn lost ancient traditions. e.g. One squad members starts singing a song her mother used to sing by bedtime. Its an innocent song about some nasty creatures and its supposed to get kids into bed early. By paying attention you realize that it actually describes some weak points about those creatures...Berzerker Jay wrote:I'd be totally into this sort of thing triggering if and when we set up camp for the night. Lost cities, treasures, fighting techniques...so many things could be learned from folklore

It would also be an excellent way to inject lore.
I'd actually be looking forward to setting down for the night on a long caravan trip if the storyteller I hired back at Stack was revealing interesting lore about the game and the surrounding area by the campfire each night. Totally, I'd sit and read it. And players who might get bored can always take a character off to scout the perimeter with the dog.
