This was posted on the Steam bug forum (https://steamcommunity.com/app/233860/d ... 040995741/ ), originally by someone else, so I don't know if it's necessary to post it here, too. But it's keeping me from playing the game.

Note that I have 741 hours in Kenshi, and this is the first major bug I've encountered. But I would like to get back to playing again. :)

To begin with, saves stop working after awhile. For me, it was after a couple of hours or so. It was easy to overlook, since I didn't get an error message (although I do get error messages sometimes when saving). When I try to save the game, it says "Saving," but that's it. And it doesn't actually save anything (autosaves, quick saves, or ordinary saves alike).

When I'd finally notice it, I'd quit the game, then load my latest save that did work (which might lose me an hour of playing time or so). Annoying, but not a huge problem. So I just lived with it. Now, however, I've got a bigger problem which might or might not be related. (But that other guy posting on Steam has both problems now, too.)

My party is in the Swamp, at the NW Swamp Village - not far from the borderlands. I'm trying to leave the Swamp, heading for the nearest Waystation. But whenever we get close to the edge of the Swamp, the game just freezes up.

Note that I can't even use Task Manager (Windows 10) to get out of that. Ctl-Alt-Delete gets me to where I can click on "Task Manager," but when I do that, the screen just blanks. The only way I can get out of Kenshi is to reboot my whole computer! I really don't like that! (So I've only tried this a couple of times.)

I do not have a Crashdump file on my computer. I don't know why not. But afterwards, when I go to Steam and have it verify the integrity of my game files, it always says that two files need to be reacquired. (But that doesn't actually help, since the same thing happens when I try again.)

Again, I'm not using the experimental versions of the game. I'm playing on the supposedly stable version, kept up-to-date by Steam. Anyway, as I say, the guy who posted this on Steam seems to have the exact same problem I do, right down to those two files needing to be reacquired. So this bug report is probably redundant. I'm just getting anxious to start playing again. :)

please upload your crashdump.zip
if teh game did not create one, then zip up and upload your Kenshi.log, in some cases your Kensh_-info.log is also required.
they must be uploaded before you restart the game as the files will be overwritten.

OK, thanks. Kenshi did not create a Crashdump file, so I'm attaching Kenshi.log and Kenshi_info.log.

At least, I am if I've figured this out OK. :)

PS. Note that I haven't tried to play Kenshi since the last time this happened. I did have Steam verify the local files, though. So it "reacquired" two files, apparently. (I don't know which ones.)

Do those files help?

Note that I started a new game yesterday and played for some hours with no problems. Saving worked fine, and I had no lockups. (Note that I have only one character in this game, and I haven't been anywhere near the Swamp, if either of those things matter.)

Oddly enough, though, when I had Steam verify the integrity of the local files, it again found two than needed to be reacquired. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problems I've been having or not. Just thought I'd mention it.

all files help
as for the two files being reacquired, its your settings files
they will always be reacquired. this is normal, any where from 2 to 4 files is normal.

Just a followup to this problem:

A new game worked fine (until just recently, but I've posted another bug report about the frequent crashes I'm experiencing in the Great Desert now), so I went back to my saved game in the Swamp.

This time, I took a different route out of the Swamp, and I had no problem. I continued to play that game (including in the Great Desert) and had no problem then, either. So this particular crash seems to be something associated with leaving the Swamp in that particular area.

Well, I have no idea, really. I just thought I'd note that I got past this particular issue.

I started a new game, playing as just a single-character faction, and I'm running into this same problem. I haven't been anywhere near the Swamp, and I thought I fixed it by importing my save into a new game. But it just happened again (near Blister Hill in the Holy Nation territory, if that matters at all).

It's not happening very often right now, but it's still happening.

That saving thing is quite bizarre.
You should see a small icon in the top left corner when you save. This signifies the game doing some copying of files in the background.
What you described suggests it is getting stuck somehow during this process, check to see if this icon is getting stuck on.
Saving errors are in kenshi_info.log, see if that file has anything if it happens again.
The crashdump you uploaded was about something else.

OK, thanks. I'm attaching a zipped copy of the kenshi_info.log file from the last time this happened. I don't see anything obvious there. It just says that the save failed.

But I wasn't expecting to need to post that (you're right; the hard crash wasn't obviously related to the save problem), so I didn't waste any time. I just immediately dumped the game.

Usually, I can't exit the game when that happens and I can't even close it in task manager, because I can't see the task manager window. This time, I could get to task manager, so I didn't waste any time. (Note that I can rarely alt-tab out of Kenshi, for some reason. And in those few times I can do that, it tends to screw up the game.)

Of course, the game often fails to save, but it tells me that. So I just try again, and it always works. When this problem happens, I don't get any notification of the failure. So it's obvious when the problem has occurred. Given that it's been common lately - not exactly frequent, so I can still play the game - I know enough to get out of the game, if I still can.

Next time, I'll see if there's anything different in that kenshi_info.log file.

Thanks!

I've been playing a lot the last couple of days, and I haven't had that save problem since... well, the last time. It really doesn't happen that often, and as long as I remember to save frequently, it hasn't been a big deal.

I'll still post the log the next time it happens, though, just so you can figure it out.

Note that I do have... ordinary crashes occasionally - again, not very often. I can't seem to identify a pattern to them. But since I have no idea if these problems are related, I thought I'd post the CrashDump file created after the one just now. So it's attached to this post.

Thanks.

FYI, it's been a week and I haven't had this save problem (although other problems with crashes and autosave not working, which I reported elsewhere),... until just now.

I'm on a new version of the game, too - 0.99.16.

I did a quicksave, and the game told me that the save failed. So I tried again, and the game told me that it was "saving," but it never reported success or failure.

Trying the quicksave a third time did nothing at all.

When I tried to exit the game, it told me that it was "exiting," but it never did. Luckily, I didn't have to reboot my entire computer this time. I was able to get into task manager and end the game there.

I know that this must be a nightmare to track down, given how seldom it occurs. Another guy reported the same problem on Steam, but it doesn't seem to be widespread, either.

I ran into this winding down my game after already saving (Did a few more things I wanted to before quiting for the night and noticed it), and now it's effecting me today.

Verified files on Steam and got one that was replaced.

Attaching my log files.

This keeps happenign to me no matter what I do like importing and such. I noticed this last time, though, that the little save icon arrow in the top left didn't go away this time. I'll keep an eye to see if that keeps happening whenever the bug happens, might be an indictation of something.

Is there any Fix on this saving error yet? 😢 I love Kenshi, The Gameplay is Amazing and it shows numerous gameplay possibilities but this bug is terrible.. I can't save anytime and anywhere coz of saving failure.. On the kenshi file log.. It says cant copy or move file or something coz access to the file is denied... I think it cannot overwrite the file or make a new file coz something is blocking it's process on creating or overwriting the file..

I Have Somewhat found a workAround on this problem by trial and error(done it 3x and i have saved with no problems)... But it's pretty tiresome.. First play it on windowed mode.. Load the game and open save/current folder and erase all files inside the current folder.. After this when you overwrite the game it will save successfully(because it will save both on the current folder and on your save file) so i think the main problem on this save error is the "Current" folder which is denying the game access to overwrite the save file inside of it... I hope this problem would be fixed coz This process of erasing and saving is very tedious 😂 P.S. I LOVE YOUR GAME LOFIGAMES GROUP...

So this is what I've currently found out about this bug... When you load a save file it creates a save file on the "current" save file folder and when you save ingame it cannot access and overwrite the "current" savefile folder BUT it could overwrite your own save file.. So as a workaround for this bug.. When you load a save file permanently delete the files inside "current" savefile folder so that when you save ingame no conflicts may occur.. I can now play and save continuously whenever i delete the files inside "current" savefile folder everytime i load the game...load game, Delete files inside "current" savefile folder, and save game without any saveError bugs... 😊 hope this helps those who have this kind of bug even for a while..

Thanks for that, although this seems to be a lot worse for you than it was for me. When I had the problem, it was generally rare. It was annoying when it happened, but once I got out of the game, I could load a save and play fine.

In fact, all of my problems with this game have been rare. At most, I'd have to import a save, instead of just loading it. And I've got 866 hours in Kenshi, so that's definitely a good thing, huh?

Not everyone is as lucky as I was, apparently, so I'm glad that you found a workaround.

You're welcome and WOW 800+hours? How is it? Still enjoyable to play?? 😊 i'm just happy that i could play this game 😅 this game's quite enjoyable for me, i totally love it, that's why i tried my best to find a workaround for it.. I've read before on some forums that some people have save errors on their games as well.. I wish the devs could fix this bug in the next update.. Happy Gaming Sir.. :)

I've been playing it, off and on, for four years, so a lot of that was on a different map entirely. And I haven't even seen the new part of the map yet, since I keep starting new characters, trying different scenarios.

But yes, it's still fun. I don't play it as obsessively as I did for awhile. But it's always my go-to game whenever I don't have anything else to do.
