Will it be freeware till it gets 1.0, or be in mount and blade style (buying beta cheaper)
And will the medical system and drag system be implemented on the first release?

Look through the news posts, its all in there. It will be mount&blade style release, although I am toying with the idea of making the very first release free. Hoping for October the 1st but its a close race.
The medical + dragging system won't be done for a while yet, just basic injury effects (missing some animations), and I will put in a simple first-aid kit or something for now that just heals all.

I see, i would suggesst making the first release free, just to cover as many people as you can, and spreading it.
Hope those draggies will be in soon, can;t wait for them, just as a side-topic, would you keep dragging realistic, or balance it in some manner so that you have a running chance?
I personally am open for both, you could make the dragging/carrying in relation to strengh/agility/traits you have.

I probably won't bother with dragging, just carrying. How would they know when to drag and when to carry? Why carry when you can drag? Dragging would make more sense in a gun-based game, where you need to quickly get someone out of the fire zone.
It would depend on strength and drain your stamina rapidly, and also depend on the weight of the person you are carrying.

And yes you are right, carrying is more fitting.

I would keep the first few releases free, since that'll help get more people involved and get you more ideas and bug-testing and such. (and no, I'm not just saying that cuz I'm currently broke and would be unable to buy a copy for a while)
Also, something you might think about is finding a way for people to, instead of paying for the game, pay for content or perhaps pay to get the newest releases sooner or something like that.
The thing is, with indi games like this that have no multiplayer, people will most likely just crack the game and distribute it illegally (like soooo many people do with mount & blade), which will cut into your profits greatly. If you can find a way to fight that without making your game less fun or more of a pain to get installed and running, then that would help you out a lot.

Well the idea is that the game will be free, but your characters can only level up to a certain level until you buy it, enough to get people started but not enough to let them continue too far. And as for the cracks, I will be releasing a new update every month, so they will have to keep re-cracking it all the time, which is a bit of help to me.

Well, that actually makes it easier to crack the game. Having a limited version that can then be unlocked into the full version actually makes the game much easier to crack, from what I've seen. (yes, I've used a few cracked games - I like to try things before I buy them and 'trial' versions usually don't give you enough room to see if the game is really worth it or not)
The way the crack works for mount & blade is to simply overwrite the key code setup so you can unlock the game with any (valid or invalid) key.
Another problem there is that you can unlock the game with any valid key, normally, so if someone were to simply distribute the key they used to unlock it, then everyone could just use that, since the game doesn't need to connect to any kind of server.

I can put myself in Chris's position being squised by the door feeling the greef that you can't get some results from your hard work.
The only way i can figure this out is, to make a big comunity and buy the game out of respect and to help further development.
Dwarf fortress for example recives a lot of money just by donations monthly!
And people pay just to help the man continue the dev and out of respect for his work.
Anyway, i admit that the only games i ever bought in my life, are 2 - Mount and Blade and Cortex Command, that is becasue i respect the indie developers and their work... not some bullcrap EA or other brand money sucking company with no ideeas.
Respect.

If a valid key gets passed around too much I will notice and I can disable that key (no more updates). Also I can modify the code slightly every update so it has to be re-cracked. At the end of the day though nothing is un-crackable (except mmorpgs), so there is no point getting too uptight with the security. Big companies spend a fortune on complicated security that invades peoples PCs and it just pisses people off so they steal it out of principle. And it still gets cracked.
Ultimately the way things are now it depends on earning the customers respect rather than forcing them.

QFT. The only software that can't be cracked runs server side, meaning the vast majority of the code never sees the client's computer. All complicated DRM is going to do is piss people off. Some would buy it anyway; I know I would, but not as many as if you just go ahead and try to get a decent fanbase (which shouldn't be too hard with a game like this).Chris wrote:If a valid key gets passed around too much I will notice and I can disable that key (no more updates). Oh, yeah, I wasn't saying to go crazy on the security to the extent that some of these idiot companies do. *coughlimitedinstallsonacdcough*
But ya, eventually adding multiplayer to the game would probably add a huge amount of revenue to the game. Something you could do is run a bnet-like server that doesn't actually host the game, but connects the players to each other. Yes, people would still run their own little private servers, but if you could set up your server to run some really cool features (not just part of the game, but part of how your server is set up) then you could build a nice playerbase of people that you know are running a legit copy. (since they'd have to have a unique cd key)
Oh, and wolf, I'd imagine Chris wouldn't appreciate me talking about how to crack mount and blade on his forum. However, I will link you to a useful site for finding answers to any question you may have about video games and internet, in general:
*Censored by the man!*
There ya go. ;P
