A form of trading cart would be an awesome idea! This reminds me of the ones in Age of Empires 2

Something along these lines - I think would fit well into the game, they should move fairly slowly but with a giant capacity, that way the accomplishment of successfully guarding one from town to town would feel good. Having carts of different sizes could cater for different characters play styles, a small one for tiny elite groups and a larger one for mass groups?

Animating a rickshaw can be tricky because the character using the rickshaw has all of his animations changed. He cant simply turn like it was a backpack, because the rickshaw would spin around at the speed of sound behind him. It even needs a new AI script describing how the character can move, backing up to the left when there is not enough room ahead for a right turn for example.
Its not impossible, and I totally like it. I like the idea more than pack animals. Pack animals are actually easier to handle program side, and it is likely why Chris is headed in that direction.

I'm surprised no one else has brought up this idea in this thread:
man-drawn chariots.
Take your fastest and strongest men or two, then make them carry around a wagon with two archers standing up and firing at enemies as they desperately attempt to catch up to them. They'd also make perfect escorts for caravan wagons, as well.
